Standing at an impressive 67 cm, this candlestick embodies the architectural "Antick" style that swept through Italy following the excavations of Pompeii. It represents the height of Italian woodcarving, where sacred geometry and organic motifs were combined to create objects of palatial drama.
The design features a classic tripartite (tripod) base, a direct homage to the sacred Roman delphics. The central shaft utilizes fluted columnar details and hand-carved acanthus foliation, creating a verticality that is both stately and elegant.
Typical of Italian workshops, the carving is executed with deep, confident gouge-work. This technique was intentional—designed to catch the flickering light of a beeswax candle to create high-contrast shadows, emphasizing the relief of the carving in dark villas or cathedral halls.
The piece retains a magnificent "dry" surface, a sophisticated blend of gilding, silver leaf, and polychrome. The mellowed patina reveals the warm reddish-brown bole (clay base) beneath the gold, a visual hallmark of authentic 18th-century Italian craftsmanship.
"There is a specific soul to 18th-century Italian carving that cannot be replicated. This candlestick possesses a wonderful 'dry' surface, exactly what the discerning collector looks for. It hasn't been over-restored; instead, it wears its history in the gentle wear of the gilt, revealing the warm 'bole' (clay) underneath. It is an architectural silhouette that works perfectly as a standalone sculpture or converted into a bespoke floor lamp for a sophisticated contemporary interior."
The candlestick is in excellent country-house condition. The carving remains remarkably intact, with only minor, stable losses consistent with over 200 years of age. The timber is stable and has been treated for historic woodworm (long-since inactive). The surface is original, showing a beautiful craquelure and authentic wear to the high points of the carving, adding to its decorative integrity.
