An Italian Oil Painting on Canvas in a Giltwood Florentine Frame
18th Century

This finely painted Italian oil on canvas, presented behind glass, dates from the 18th century and is believed to have been taken from a larger original composition, a common and historically accepted practice, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries when fragments of larger religious or allegorical works were re-purposed for private interiors.

The composition depicts cherubs (putti) in a dynamic, Baroque-influenced arrangement, animated by fluid movement, warm flesh tones, and a lively sense of expression. The handling of the figures, particularly the modelling of the faces and limbs, suggests an accomplished hand trained within the Italian tradition, drawing on the influence of late Baroque and early Rococo painting.

The painting is housed in an ornate giltwood Florentine frame, richly carved with scrolling foliage and pierced detail. The frame is entirely appropriate to the painting and likely of similar date or slightly later, enhancing the overall decorative impact while remaining historically sympathetic.

The presence of glass offers additional protection and allows the work to be displayed confidently in a domestic setting.

Circa 1700–1780

Italian paintings featuring putti were widely produced during the 17th and 18th centuries, often forming part of larger ceiling, altarpiece, or allegorical compositions. During later periods, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries, sections of such works were sometimes sensitively removed and reframed to meet changing tastes and the growing demand for cabinet pictures suitable for private interiors.

Florentine giltwood frames of this type are renowned for their exuberant carving and luminous gilding, and have long been collected in their own right. The pairing of an Italian painting fragment with a Florentine frame reflects a long-standing tradition in the Grand Tour market and remains highly desirable today.

Dealer’s Comment

A highly decorative and evocative work, combining the charm of Italian figural painting with the richness of a Florentine giltwood frame. The expressive quality of the cherubs, together with the sense of movement and colour, makes this an engaging and characterful piece. Ideal for adding warmth, history, and visual interest to both classical and contemporary interiors.

Condition Report

In good condition, consistent with age and history.

The oil painting shows expected age-related wear, including light surface craquelure and minor abrasions, entirely in keeping with an 18th-century work. The canvas has been laid behind glass, providing protection and stability. No obvious signs of recent over-painting or aggressive restoration observed.

The giltwood Florentine frame is in good condition, with areas of wear, rubbing, and minor losses to the gilding, commensurate with age. These areas contribute to the overall patina and authenticity. Structurally sound and displays well.
