An altar table is a table traditionally positioned within a church or chapel to support sacred objects used during religious ceremonies. Antique altar tables are commonly crafted from oak, walnut or other hardwoods and may feature Gothic, Renaissance or Baroque carving, tracery and ecclesiastical ornament. Many surviving examples have been sympathetically repurposed as console tables, hall tables or statement pieces within country house and contemporary interiors.
