An arabesque is an intricate decorative motif composed of scrolling foliage, interlacing lines and flowing geometric patterns. Originating in Islamic art, arabesque ornament became widely adopted in European decorative arts, furniture, architecture and metalwork, particularly during the Renaissance and nineteenth-century revival styles.
