Birch is a fine-grained hardwood valued for its pale colour, smooth texture and excellent working qualities. It has been widely used in Scandinavian, Russian and Central European furniture making, particularly during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Birch is also associated with Biedermeier furniture and later Mid-Century Modern design due to its clean appearance and subtle figuring.
