Buffing is a finishing technique that uses a soft polishing wheel, cloth or specialised compounds to smooth and refine the surface of wood, metal or lacquer. In furniture and metal restoration, buffing can produce a high-quality finish when carried out carefully. However, excessive buffing of antique objects may remove original surfaces, soften fine detail and reduce historical integrity. Professional conservators use buffing sparingly and only where appropriate.
