A Bureau is a writing desk incorporating a hinged fall-front writing surface above a series of drawers. Opening the fall reveals pigeonholes, drawers and compartments designed for correspondence, stationery and personal documents. Popular throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, bureaux remain among the most recognisable forms of antique writing furniture.
