Calico is a plain-woven cotton fabric originally imported from Calicut in India, from which it takes its name. Known for its strength, versatility and natural appearance, calico has been widely used since the seventeenth century for upholstery linings, curtains, household textiles and artists\' canvases. Antique calico often has an unbleached cream colour and simple weave, making it a practical and durable material. Today it remains popular in furniture restoration and traditional upholstery.
