Empire is the grand Neo-Classical style that flourished in France during the reign of Napoleon I (1804--1815). Inspired by the architecture and decorative arts of Ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, Empire design is characterised by bold proportions, gilt bronze mounts, classical columns and imperial motifs including eagles, laurel wreaths and swans.
