French Polishing is a traditional wood-finishing technique that builds multiple thin layers of shellac by hand to produce a deep, rich, high-gloss finish. Developed in France during the eighteenth century, it became the preferred finish for fine furniture throughout the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods. Today, French polishing remains an important conservation skill used to restore antique furniture while preserving its character and patina.
