THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Garden Antiques

Garden antiques are historic objects made for, or suited to, gardens, terraces and outdoor spaces. They include stone and lead statuary, urns and planters, sundials, fountains, birdbaths, staddle stones, troughs, cast-iron and wirework furniture, gates, edging tiles, cloches, terracotta pots and architectural fragments repurposed as garden features.

The great landscape gardens of eighteenth-century Britain created a demand for classical sculpture, urns and temples, and later Victorian gardens added cast-iron seats, ornate fountains and conservatory fittings. Many garden ornaments were made in Coade stone, cast stone, lead, marble and terracotta, while the Arts and Crafts garden favoured reclaimed stone and simple craftsmanship. Age is revealed by weathering, lichen and moss, and a natural patina is highly prized, as it gives a newly planted garden instant maturity. When buying, check for frost damage, repairs and stability, and consider weight and access for delivery. Good garden antiques add structure, focal points and a sense of history to outdoor spaces large and small.
