Rewiring

Rewiring is the replacement of old or unsafe electrical wiring and components in a light fitting, making it safe to use with a modern supply. For antique and vintage lighting it is one of the most important aspects of restoration, as original wiring is often perished, brittle, insulated with rubber or fabric that has deteriorated, or simply not suitable for current standards.

A professional rewire usually involves removing the old flex and internal wiring, replacing lamp holders and switches where necessary, adding an earth connection to metal fittings, fitting appropriate cable grips and testing the finished piece. Good practice preserves as much original character as possible, for example by using period-style braided flex and retaining original switches or holders where they can be made safe. Many oil lamps, gas fittings and candlesticks were converted to electricity in the past, and these too may need sympathetic rewiring. Buyers should always ask whether antique lighting has been rewired and tested, and fittings should be installed by a qualified electrician.
