Safety Testing

Safety testing, in the antiques trade, is the inspection and electrical testing of lighting and other electrical items to confirm that they are safe to use. It applies particularly to antique and vintage lamps, chandeliers and wall lights, many of which were originally made for candles, oil or gas and have since been converted, or which retain early wiring that has deteriorated.

A competent electrician or restorer will typically check the condition and type of the cable, the lamp holders, the switches, the plug and fuse, and the earthing of any metal parts, followed by tests of earth continuity and insulation resistance, often carried out as a portable appliance test. Old rubber or fabric-insulated cable becomes brittle with age and is a common hazard, so rewiring is usually recommended for older fittings. Reputable dealers in Britain rewire and test lighting before sale and should be able to confirm what work has been done. Buyers of untested items from auctions or abroad should have them checked before use. Fixed fittings such as chandeliers and wall lights should be installed by a qualified electrician in line with current wiring regulations, and the weight of heavy fittings must be properly supported.
