THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Wall Cabinet

A wall cabinet is a cabinet designed to hang on a wall rather than stand on the floor, usually fitted with one or more doors enclosing shelves. Antique wall cabinets range from small country pieces in oak or pine to glazed display cabinets, bathroom cabinets, apothecary and spice cabinets, and fine hanging corner cabinets in mahogany or walnut.

Hanging cabinets became common in English homes from the eighteenth century, when small glazed cabinets were used to display porcelain and glass and solid-door versions stored household valuables. Country makers produced simple hanging cupboards and spice cabinets fitted with small drawers, while the Victorians and Edwardians made many wall cabinets for bathrooms, kitchens, offices and smoking rooms, some with mirrored doors or carved decoration. Arts and Crafts designers produced attractive wall cabinets with metal hinges and leaded glazing. When buying, collectors look for original hanging fittings, glass, hinges and locks, good colour and an honest surface. Evidence of the method of hanging on the back, such as old holes and wear, helps confirm age. Wall cabinets are practical in modern homes, providing storage and display in kitchens, bathrooms, halls and studies without using floor space.
