A Bell Jar Lantern is a hanging ceiling lantern enclosed within a large bell-shaped glass shade, typically suspended from a decorative brass or bronze gallery. Popular during the Georgian, Regency and Victorian periods, bell jar lanterns were originally designed to protect candles and later oil or gas flames from drafts while maximising light output. Today they remain among the most sought-after forms of antique hallway and entrance lighting.
