A Boss is an ornamental projection, typically carved in stone or wood, found at the intersection of ribs in vaulted ceilings or used as decorative embellishment on furniture, doors and architectural features. Medieval bosses often depict foliage, heraldic devices, animals or religious subjects and demonstrate exceptional craftsmanship. They remain important decorative elements in Gothic architecture.
