Cloisonné

Cloisonné is an ancient decorative enamelling technique in which thin metal wires are used to create small compartments, or cloisons, that are filled with coloured enamel before firing and polishing. Although originating in the ancient Near East, cloisonné became particularly associated with Chinese and Japanese decorative arts during the nineteenth century. Antique cloisonné vases, bowls, lamps and decorative objects are admired for their vibrant colours, intricate patterns and exceptional craftsmanship. *Related Terms*\ Bronze, Chinese Enamel, Enamel, Japanese Art, Meiji Period, Vase.
