Fire Gilding

Fire Gilding, also known as Mercury Gilding, is a historic process in which a gold-mercury amalgam was applied to bronze or brass before being heated to leave a durable layer of gold bonded to the metal. Widely used on ormolu mounts, clocks, lighting and decorative objects during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the technique produced an exceptionally rich finish but was discontinued due to the dangers of mercury exposure.
