A Hurricane Shade is a protective glass chimney or shade designed to surround the flame of an oil lamp or candle, shielding it from drafts while improving the distribution of light. Traditionally hand-blown from clear, frosted or coloured glass, hurricane shades became widely used throughout the nineteenth century on oil lamps, hall lamps and decorative lighting. Original antique examples are increasingly sought after for both restoration projects and decorative display.
