Indian Miniature Painting of a Royal Procession with Elephant and Horse, 20th Century

A finely detailed Indian miniature painting depicting a royal or courtly procession, with a richly caparisoned elephant accompanied by a mounted horseman and attendants.

Executed in opaque watercolour and ink on paper, the composition follows the long tradition of North Indian court and procession painting, where rulers, noblemen, elephants, horses and attendants were depicted with extraordinary attention to costume, textiles and ceremonial detail.

The central scene is framed above and below by panels of flowing Persianate script, giving the work the appearance of an illustrated manuscript page. The combination of calligraphy and miniature painting creates a particularly decorative composition and reflects the strong Persian influence on the manuscript traditions of Mughal and later North Indian painting.

The work has been newly framed and glazed in a decorative gilt frame, providing a finished presentation ready for display.

The Royal Procession

The central image depicts an elaborately dressed elephant carrying three figures within a howdah, accompanied in the foreground by a mounted figure on a white horse.

The elephant is shown in profile, its dark grey body contrasting beautifully with the pale green landscape. Its head, legs and body are decorated with ceremonial ornaments, while an elaborate patterned textile falls from the howdah across its back.

Three male figures ride above. One holds a long staff or spear, while another appears to hold a fly whisk or ceremonial implement.

Immediately in front, a finely dressed figure rides a white horse, turning back towards the elephant and its occupants.

The close relationship between the mounted figures gives the composition a strong sense of procession and movement despite the formal profile arrangement.

Elephant & Horse

Both animals have been rendered with considerable attention to detail.

The elephant wears an ornamental headpiece and decorative harness, with painted bands around its legs and a richly patterned textile beneath the howdah.

Its curling trunk, tusks and expressive eye are finely delineated.

The white horse provides a striking visual contrast. Its harness and saddle cloth are decorated in red, blue, yellow and black, while its raised foreleg gives the otherwise formal composition a suggestion of forward movement.

Elephants and horses were important symbols of status, ceremony and royal authority within Indian court culture and consequently became recurring subjects in Mughal and Rajput painting.

Calligraphic Panels

A particularly interesting feature of the work is the presence of calligraphic text above and below the painted scene.

The flowing script is Persianate in character and recalls the manuscript tradition in which painted miniatures were incorporated alongside literary, historical or poetic texts.

The calligraphy has been enclosed within narrow coloured rules of yellow, green and red, visually connecting it with the painted image between.

The text has not been independently translated or identified, and the work is therefore catalogued according to its visual characteristics rather than assigning it to a particular manuscript or literary source.

Indian Miniature Tradition

The painting belongs to the broader tradition of Indian miniature painting, drawing particularly upon Mughal and North Indian court imagery.

Royal processions, equestrian portraits and richly decorated elephants were recurring subjects within Indian court painting. Such scenes provided opportunities for artists to depict the elaborate textiles, jewellery, weapons, animals and ceremonial practices associated with aristocratic life.

The present work is unsigned and has no documented attribution to a named artist or historical workshop. It is therefore catalogued as a 20th-century Indian miniature in the Mughal/Rajput tradition, rather than attributed to a specific earlier school.

Materials & Technique

The work is executed in opaque watercolour and ink on paper.

Fine black outlines define the figures and animals, while carefully applied areas of colour create the decorative textiles, clothing and landscape.

Particular attention has been paid to the elephant's ceremonial trappings, the patterned howdah, the horse's harness and the clothing of the individual figures.

The palette incorporates soft greens and blues with stronger accents of red, yellow, turquoise, black and white.

The calligraphic panels have been executed in dark ink and enclosed within fine coloured borders.

Newly Framed

The painting has been newly framed and glazed.

A broad neutral mount surrounds the miniature, allowing the relatively small and finely detailed image to remain the focal point.

The decorative gilt frame has a raised bead border and stepped inner moulding, with a softly aged finish that complements the warm tones of the paper and the traditional character of the miniature.

The framing has been deliberately kept consistent with the larger Krishna miniature, allowing the two works to be displayed successfully together while retaining their individual identities.

Condition

Presented in good decorative condition.

The paper displays age-related toning, small marks and minor variations, particularly to the surrounding areas, consistent with the nature of the material.

The painted image retains strong colour and considerable fine detail.

The work has been newly mounted, glazed and framed, providing protection for the painting and allowing it to be displayed immediately.

Please refer closely to the detailed photographs, which form an integral part of the condition report.

Decorative Appeal

A particularly charming work combining three highly collectable elements of Indian art: miniature painting, calligraphy and courtly procession imagery.

The richly decorated elephant and elegant white horse give the small composition considerable presence, while the manuscript-style calligraphy above and below adds another layer of visual and historical interest.

Its compact dimensions make it ideal for a gallery wall, study, library or cabinet-of-curiosities interior, while the newly applied gilt frame gives it sufficient presence to be displayed independently.

It also forms an attractive companion to other Indian miniatures and works on paper.
