Additional Information
A Magnificent Pair of 19th Century Brass Corinthian Column Table Lamps

This is a truly imposing pair of 19th-century Victorian table lamps, designed in the noble Neoclassical tradition. Substantial in both scale and weight, these lamps are a testament to the grandeur of the period. Originally conceived as high-quality oil lamps for a significant residence, they have been expertly converted for modern electrical use while retaining their historic integrity.

The lamps follow the strict architectural rules of the Corinthian order, the most ornate of the classical Greek styles.

  • The Capitals: The craftsmanship is exceptional; each capital features intricately cast acanthus leaves and delicate volutes. The crispness of the casting suggests a maker of high repute, as the fine details remain sharp and well-defined.

  • The Shaft: The capitals sit atop slender, elegant columns defined by tight, vertical reeding. This linear texture draws the eye upward, emphasising their impressive height and creating a beautiful play of light and shadow across the brass surface.

  • The Plinth: The columns are anchored by substantial, stepped square bases. These tiered pedestals provide a sense of classical permanence and the necessary "heft" to balance the tall, slender columns.

The proportions are expertly weighted; they possess a commanding presence without appearing cumbersome, making them ideal for flanking a large sideboard or anchoring a grand console table.

Reflecting the 19th-century fascination with the "Grand Tour" and the ruins of ancient Rome and Greece, these lamps were a hallmark of Victorian luxury. During this era, such pieces were essential fixtures in the vestibules and drawing rooms of grand British estates. Before the advent of the lightbulb, these would have featured glass chimneys and oil reservoirs—the pinnacle of domestic technology at the time. Their conversion to electricity has been handled with care to preserve their stately silhouette.

Dealers Comments:

"It is rare to find a pair of this specific 'heavyweight' quality still together. The 'thin tight ribs' on the columns are a sign of superior casting—cheaper versions often have much coarser fluting. What I particularly like about this pair is their versatility; while they are quintessentially Victorian, their clean Neoclassical lines allow them to sit just as comfortably in a contemporary interior as they would in a traditional library. They are 'statement' pieces in every sense of the word."

Condition Report

These lamps are presented in excellent functional condition.

Both lamps have been fully and professionally rewired using high-quality British components, including aesthetically appropriate braided 3-core fabric wire. They have successfully undergone a PAT inspection (Portable Appliance Testing) to ensure they meet modern safety standards. As is expected with genuine 19th-century utility items, there are minor signs of age-related wear. This is most notable on the stepped bases, where there are a couple of small dents that do not detract from the overall structural integrity or visual appeal, but rather serve as a testament to their long history.

Note on Lampshade: The lampshades pictured are available to purchase separately from Shackleton Fox. This lamps shown are with a (17.5cm top x 23cm height x 35cm bottom), a size specifically designed to harmonize with the substantial proportions.
