A Magnificent Pair of 19th Century Brass Corinthian Column Table Lamps

This is a truly imposing pair of 19th-century Victorian brass table lamps, designed in the noble Neoclassical tradition. Substantial in both scale and weight, these lamps were originally conceived as grand high-quality oil lamps before being expertly converted for modern electrical use.

The craftsmanship is evident in the Corinthian capitals, which feature intricately cast acanthus leaves and delicate volutes. These sit atop slender, elegant columns defined by thin, tight vertical ribbing (reeding), which draws the eye upward and emphasises their architectural height. The columns are anchored by substantial stepped square bases, providing both a stable footing and a sense of classical permanence.

The brass has developed a deep, natural luster over more than a century, offering a warmth that only genuine period metalwork can provide.

The Corinthian order, the most decorative of the three Greek classical orders, became a hallmark of Victorian luxury. During the 19th century, such lamps were common in the "vestibules" and "drawing rooms" of grand British estates, designed to emulate the stone columns of ancient Rome and Greece. Originally burning oil, these lamps were the pinnacle of domestic technology before the advent of the lightbulb.

Dealers Comments:

"It is rare to find a pair of this specific 'heavyweight' quality still together. The 'thin tight ribs' on the columns are a sign of superior casting—cheaper versions often have much coarser fluting. What I particularly like about this pair is their versatility; while they are quintessentially Victorian, their clean Neoclassical lines allow them to sit just as comfortably in a contemporary interior as they would in a traditional library. They are 'statement' pieces in every sense of the word."

Condition Report

These lamps are presented in excellent functional condition.

Both lamps have been fully and professionally rewired using high-quality British components, including aesthetically appropriate braided 3-core fabric wire. They have successfully undergone a PAT inspection (Portable Appliance Testing) to ensure they meet modern safety standards. As is expected with genuine 19th-century utility items, there are minor signs of age-related wear. This is most notable on the stepped bases, where there are a couple of small dents that do not detract from the overall structural integrity or visual appeal, but rather serve as a testament to their long history.
