An albarello is a cylindrical ceramic pharmacy jar traditionally used to store herbs, spices, ointments and medicinal preparations. Originating in the Middle East and becoming especially popular during the Italian Renaissance, albarelli were decorated with colourful tin-glazed designs, coats of arms and inscriptions identifying their contents. Today they are highly collectible for their historical significance and decorative appeal.
