Faience is a type of tin-glazed earthenware renowned for its bright white surface and colourful hand-painted decoration. Originating in Renaissance Italy before flourishing in France, the Netherlands and Germany, faience was widely used for decorative plates, vases, tiles and ornamental objects from the sixteenth century onwards.
