A Caryatid is a sculpted female figure used as an architectural support in place of a traditional column or pillar. Inspired by Ancient Greek architecture, caryatids became popular decorative elements during the Renaissance and Neo-Classical periods and frequently appear on antique furniture, mirrors, fireplaces and architectural features. Rather than serving purely as ornament, caryatids symbolise strength, elegance and classical refinement. *Related Terms*\ Atlas Figure, Capital, Classical Architecture, Column, Corinthian Column, Neo-Classicism, Pedestal.
