A Coal Scuttle is a decorative container designed for storing coal beside a fireplace, allowing fuel to be conveniently accessed while complementing the interior of the room. Popular throughout the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods, coal scuttles were crafted from brass, copper, iron and painted metal, often incorporating swing handles, lion mask mounts or repoussé decoration. Antique coal scuttles continue to be valued for their craftsmanship, practicality and decorative appeal within period and country house interiors.
