A Corbel is a projecting architectural support extending from a wall to carry the weight of a beam, arch, shelf or overhanging structure. Traditionally carved from stone, timber or cast iron, corbels may be plain or richly decorated with foliage, animals, grotesques or Classical motifs. They are commonly found beneath fireplaces, balconies, rooflines and architectural cornices.
