Hessian, also known as burlap, is a coarse woven fabric traditionally made from jute fibres. Historically used for sacks, upholstery foundations, agricultural storage and protective coverings, hessian also plays an important role in traditional upholstery, where it provides structural support beneath stuffing materials and springs. Antique furniture often retains original hessian as part of its internal construction.
