An impressive and unusually large early 20th-century hand-forged wrought iron eight-light chandelier, displaying superb traditional blacksmithing throughout its substantial architectural form.
Dating to approximately 1920–1940, the chandelier draws strongly upon earlier Gothic and Spanish ironwork traditions, with a broad circular frame constructed from heavy iron strapwork, eight individually forged candle arms, twisted stems, scrolling decoration and a dramatic chain suspension.
At 90 cm (35.4 inches) wide and weighing approximately 23 kg (50.7 lbs), this is a substantial statement chandelier intended for a room capable of carrying its scale.
Its proportions would make it particularly effective suspended over a large dining table or kitchen island, or within a substantial entrance hall, stairwell, vaulted room or country-house interior.
The quality of the ironwork is what distinguishes this chandelier.
The main body is formed from a broad circular band of wrought iron, assembled using traditional riveted strapwork. Curved iron straps pass around the frame and terminate beneath it in individually worked scrolling ends.
Eight arms radiate around the circumference, each rising towards a candle socket supported by a shallow iron drip pan.
The candle stems are particularly decorative. Each incorporates a pronounced hand-forged barley-twist section, before tapering dramatically downwards into a long faceted iron pendant terminating in a small rounded knop.
These repeated twisted and tapered elements create a strong rhythm around the chandelier and give it considerably more visual interest than a conventional wrought iron fitting.
Subtle irregularities in the hammering, twists, rivets and individual components remain visible throughout and are characteristic of traditional forged ironwork.
The chandelier belongs to the early 20th-century revival of historic European ironwork, drawing particularly upon Spanish, Gothic and medieval-inspired forms.
Rather than reproducing a single historical design, the maker has combined traditional architectural ironwork techniques with the practical requirements of an electrically illuminated chandelier.
The combination of dark wrought iron, scrolling strapwork, twisted stems and exposed riveted construction gives the piece a distinctly architectural quality.
Despite its historic inspiration, the design works remarkably well within contemporary interiors. Its relatively open construction allows the chandelier to have significant scale without becoming visually heavy.
The chandelier accommodates eight candle-style lights, evenly positioned around the circular frame.
Each is fitted with an individual iron drip pan and traditional candle sleeve, maintaining the appearance of a large historic candelabrum while providing modern electric illumination.
When illuminated without shades, the eight lamps produce a dramatic open-candle effect.
Alternatively, as photographed, the chandelier can be paired with our:

The small pleated shades soften the light and give the chandelier a more tailored country-house appearance.
Please note: the eight lampshades shown in some photographs are not included in the sale and are available separately directly from Shackleton Fox.
The chandelier retains a particularly attractive and substantial iron suspension arrangement.
Multiple heavy iron chains rise from individual points around the chandelier and converge above the body, creating the distinctive triangular suspension seen in the photographs.
The fitting is completed by a decorative wrought iron ceiling plate with radiating scrolling terminals, continuing the historic character of the ironwork right through to the ceiling.
The chain arrangement allows the large chandelier body to remain visually balanced while reinforcing its architectural character.
This chandelier has undergone a comprehensive restoration through the Shackleton Fox workshop.
The wrought iron has been carefully cleaned, treated and sympathetically finished to protect the metal while retaining the naturally aged surface and evidence of hand forging.
The chandelier has also been fully rewired, with its electrical components renewed as required and the complete fitting electrically tested for modern use.
Our approach has deliberately been conservative. The intention was not to make the iron appear newly manufactured, but to preserve the variations, forging marks and aged character that distinguish the original workmanship.
It is now ready for installation by a suitably qualified electrician.
Presented in very good antique condition following comprehensive restoration.
The wrought iron displays natural variations associated with hand forging together with surface texture, minor marks, historic wear and areas of patination consistent with its age.
The ironwork has been professionally cleaned and treated as part of the restoration process.
The chandelier has been fully rewired and electrically tested.

As heritage craftsmen and antique specialists, we believe in preserving the authenticity and integrity of each piece. Original finishes, patina, wear, and signs of age are retained wherever possible, as these elements contribute to both character and historical significance.
When restoration, rewiring, repairs, or conservation work is required, it is undertaken sympathetically using traditional techniques and materials appropriate to the period of the piece. Our philosophy is one of careful stewardship rather than unnecessary restoration, ensuring antiques remain both functional and historically respectful.
The result is a collection of pieces that have been thoughtfully prepared, allowing future owners to enjoy them with confidence while preserving their unique story and character.
