THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Metalwork

Metalwork is the craft of shaping and decorating metals to create functional and ornamental objects. In the antiques world it covers an enormous range of items made from iron, steel, brass, bronze, copper, pewter, spelter, silver and gold, from domestic candlesticks, kitchenware and fire tools to gates, lanterns, sculpture and fine furniture mounts.

Traditional techniques include casting, forging, raising, spinning, chasing, engraving, repoussé and gilding, often combined within a single object. Wrought iron was worked by blacksmiths at the forge, while cast iron, which became widely available during the Industrial Revolution, allowed elaborate designs to be mass-produced for architecture and gardens. Brass and copper were favoured for domestic wares and lighting, and bronze for sculpture and high-quality mounts. When assessing antique metalwork, look at the quality of casting and finishing, signs of age and wear, and the condition of any original patina, lacquer or gilding, which should not be over-cleaned.
