Set of 18th Century Baroque style Solomonic Carved Gilt Wood Columns

Highly decorative small set of 4 late 18th century Baroque style Solomonic carved gilt wood columns, possibly Spanish or Italian with original gilding

This stunning set of half columns consist of Corinthian capitals to the top carved with scrolling acanthus leading down to the spiral Solomonic columns carved with scrolling foliage and flower decoration.

It is believed that a set of columns from 'The Temple of Solomon' were taken to Rome in the 4th century and used in the original 'St Peter's Basilica', the columns used to decorate the high altar, many such columns as these have been used in altars in Europe particularly in ltaly and Spain.

The Solomonic column was also often used as a feature in Baroque architecture, again commonly used in altar pieces.

According to the Bible, Boaz and Jachin were two copper, brass or bronze pillars which stood on the porch of Solomon's Temple, the first Temple in Jerusalem. They are used as symbols in Freemasonry and sometimes in religious architecture.
