An Echinus is the rounded moulding forming the lower section of a classical capital, positioned between the shaft of a column and the square abacus above. Most commonly associated with the Doric order, the echinus provides both structural support and visual transition. It became a defining feature of classical and Neo-Classical architecture and frequently appears on period fireplaces, furniture and architectural ornament. *Related Terms*\ Abacus, Capital, Classical Architecture, Doric Capital, Ionic Capital.
