Electroplate is a manufacturing process in which a thin layer of silver is deposited onto a base metal, such as copper, brass or nickel silver, using electrolysis. Introduced during the nineteenth century, electroplating revolutionised the production of affordable silverware, allowing beautifully finished domestic tableware and decorative objects to be produced at a fraction of the cost of solid silver. Antique electroplated wares remain highly collectable for their craftsmanship, practicality and historical significance. *Related Terms*\ Electroplated Silver, EPNS, Sheffield Plate, Silver Plate, Tableware, Victorian Silver.
