Etching is a printmaking technique in which an image is created by using acid to incise a design into a metal plate, most commonly copper or zinc. Ink is applied to the etched lines before the plate is pressed onto paper, producing detailed and expressive prints. Popular from the Renaissance onwards, etchings have been used by many of history\'s greatest artists and remain highly valued for their artistic quality and craftsmanship.
