A woolwork picture is a decorative textile image created primarily with coloured wool threads worked onto a woven foundation such as canvas. Particularly popular during the nineteenth century, woolwork pictures encompass subjects ranging from landscapes and animals to portraits, religious scenes, flowers and sentimental compositions.
Unlike practical needlework made primarily for clothing or household textiles, woolwork pictures were generally intended to be framed and displayed as works of decorative art.
