A Balustrade is a protective railing consisting of a series of balusters supporting a continuous handrail or coping. Found on staircases, balconies, terraces and bridges, balustrades have been an important architectural feature since the Renaissance. Antique balustrades may be constructed from carved stone, wrought iron, cast iron, timber or bronze, combining both structural support and decorative elegance.
